IO-CSIC ICONE ESR Francesca Gallazzi welcomed the Steering Committee of 14IND13 PhotInd “Improved metrology for the photonics industry”. During the visit the current experiments carried out by the ICONE students Giuseppe Rizzelli and Francesca Gallazzi in the Institute of Optics of Madrid were explained. 14IND13 PhotInd “Improved metrology for the photonics industry” is an EMPIR project financed by EURAMET (European Association of National Metrology Institutes), which objective is to develop characterization and calibration techniques for the new generation of photonics components and fiber optics and waveguide devices and their industrial application.read more
15th July 2016 ICONE ESR Kseniia Goroshko gave a presentation on Career opportunities in industry for PhDs in Optics and Photonics. She presented ICONE industrial partner VPIphotonics. Other four invited speakers presented Ferdinand Braun Institute, Corning, PicoQuant and 5micron.
The event arose huge interest amoung Berlin and Brandenburg area graduates (more than 100 participants). When the former President of Humbold Univ. Berlin, Christoph Markschies, in his introductory speech asked the participants of the Career day to vote if the want to stay in academia not a single hand rose up. However, all hands were up when he asked if participants plan to enter industrial positions. The result of this spontaneous voting, though showing the moods in Berlin area only, is remarkable and representative.
On June 28th 2016, Dr. Robert Lieberman, president of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), has visited the installations of FOCUS and Group of Photonics Engineering of University of Alcalá (GRIFO-UAH).
After a brief introduction to the work and the people of FOCUS (presented by ER Dr. Hugo Martins) and of the GRIFO-UAH (presented by Dr. Sonia Martin-Lopez), the visit headed to the laboratories of FOCUS and UAH, for a practical demonstration of the sensors here developed.
The visit takes particular relevance given the strong background of Dr. Robert Lieberman in optical sensing, which is the main area of research of both FOCUS and UAH group, being important not only to divulge the work that is done in these groups, but also to establish future collaborations.
Overall, it has been a pleasure to receive Dr. Robert Lieberman.read more

Date: 2015/04/22 10h40-11h30;
Place: Escola Secundária de Latino Coelho, Lamego, Portugal (High School Latino Coelho)
Title: “Seguir uma carreira científica no estrangeiro: Porquê e Como” (“Pursuing a scientific career abroad: Why and How”)
Hugo Martins, ICONE post-doctoral researcher from FOCUS, presented a 50m talk in the high school Latino Coelho entitled “Pursuing a scientific career abroad: Why and How” (“Seguir uma carreira científica no estrangeiro: Porquê e Como”). The talk followed an invitation by Prof. Manuel Augusto, Physics professor and one of the supervisors for the implementation of a project funded by Erasmos + at High School Latino Coelho.
For a room full of students between the ages of 15 and 18, already familiar with the program Erasmos +, the talk was aimed at sharing the experience of working abroad as a Scientist, and presenting a personal perspective of the pros and cons on emigration and pursuing a scientific career abroad.
A small overview on existing mobility programs was presented and, in particular, it was explained how the ICONE project is organized, as an example of a successful network providing connection between stat-of-the-art research institutions in Europe working with optical fibers.
The talk was followed by an open discussion with the students and a small recorded interview.read more

“CIUDAD CIENCIA”. IO-CSIC OUTREACH
IO-CSIC ESR Francesca Gallazzi together with Madrid IOSA Student Chapter contributed to the project “Ciudad Ciencia” (“Science City”, http://www.ciudadciencia.es/). The programme is aimed to bring first hand scientific outreach to Spanish localities far from big urban centers and universities. The “Discovering Light” workshops were held on 19th and 20th of November in Los Llanos de Aridanea, La Palma (Canary Islands) for primary school children and general public.
IO-CSIC ESRs, Maria Camarasa and Giuseppe Rizelli, and ER Hugo Martins organized a set of events opened to Technical audience: “Scientific Weekend” (Finde Científico), May 2015, IOSA Student Chapter Scientific Seminars (x2), O-CSIC Internal Seminars: Fibers and Optical communication. Besides, Marie-Curie Action and ICONE project was promoted at student’s visits to Universitie’s open days and pre-school and primary education meetings.
