Orange Poland

Orange Polska S.A., (OPL, member of France Telecom Group) as the leader of the telecommunication’s market in Poland with 15 thousands employees, provides broad portfolio of different types of services, such as voice, video streaming, cloud and Internet access for fixed and mobile customers. Therefore, the important role is also inventing and developing of new services. The unit designated for this is R&D branch Centrum Badawczo-Rozwojowe called Orange Labs Polska (OLP). It`s mission is to provide innovative IT solutions and telecommunication services with high quality, in order to increase competitive advantage of OPL Group. In OLP is working 25 Doctors of IT Science and nearly 20 PhD students. It also participates in standardization works of international organizations such as ITU, ISO/IEC, CENELEC, Broadband Forum and Home Gateway Initiative.

Orange Labs Polska, accelerates innovations development and their implementation in OPL Group as well as for France Telecom Group in selected areas – core and access networks (including CDN, new network architectures like ICN, NDN, SDN, virtualized and cloud systems, network synchronization solutions), applications development (e.g. OTT, contextual), middleware and service platforms (like video streaming, content distribution, open API). Research activities of Orange Labs Polska allows for faster deployment of new solutions and stimulation of future technological trends and development directions. It also leads towards close collaboration with national and international manufacturers as well as universities in creation of innovative solutions for future services.

Expertise from previous and on-going projects

Orange Labs in Poland participates in European R&D projects and national/international standardization bodies activities. OLP participated in several ICT FP-6 and FP-7 funded projects, such as EuQoS, MUSE, SPICE, 4WARD, NapaWine, TALOS, OneLab2, GEYSERS, DEMONS, FINSENY, OCEAN, and SNIFFER. OLP is involved in the ongoing FP-7 projects e,g. FUSION, FINESCE, GreenICN and projects funded by national governmental organizations: UP-TO-US, COMMUNE, OPTIME, NOTTS.
For network synchronization systems and time/frequency distribution systems OLP has long experience in development of solutions for SDH network and implementation of synchronous Ethernet. OPL network built its own synchronization center with a backup solution. The center is equipped with atomic clocks connected with Polish Chamber of Measures using optical fiber link. OPL offers NTP service Stratum-1 for Internet users.

Infrastructure and equipment

OPL as national network operator and service provider is owner of commercial network infrastructure (for fixed and mobile access) and IT data centers. Beside production infrastructure for research and development purposes the experimental environment was built, e.g. the private PlanetLab fully managed and dedicated only for OPL purposes with nodes distributed in the network with Gb connections, synchronization laboratory (atomic clocks with optical fiber connections with external laboratories), laboratory data center infrastructure (physical and virtualized machines), cloud infrastructure, different types of service platforms (especially for video services, media distribution) and broad portfolio of end-user devices.
